DelGrosso Appointed To State Legislature

Friday, August 14th, 2009

While many were predicting an ugly public spectacle, the Republican vacancy committee for the vacated House District 51 seat voted on the replacement to Don Marostica’s seat in the Colorado State Legislature last night in an orderly and dignified manner.

Yes, a few came looking to disrupt the process or bend rules for their choice but the organizers didn’t allow that to happen. Especially gratifying was to see the decorum and respect all the 5 candidates showed one another. see the story

Former State House Rep. Don Marostica, now representing Governor Bill Ritter, did show at the meeting looking for a speaking role. Unlike the turmoil he and another former State House Rep. for the 51st, Tim Fritz, created when former Rep. Jim Welker chose not to run again, last night’s meeting was calm, polite and well organized.

Brian DelGrosso clearly has rallied his party behind him and will likely be a tough incumbent in 2010 for anyone to challenge.

Any comments?

McNaught’s Qualifications Questioned

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

The web blog ColoraodoPols reported yesterday:

The race to replace Rep. Don Marostica took an illegal turn today. Kevin Mcnaught who announced he is seeking the HD 51 seat has run into a constitutional problem.

Unfortunately for Mr. McNaught, he “resides” in Berthoud, Colorado outside “the territory included in the limits of the district.” He owns a rental property within the district which at one time he lived in and apparently has kept his voter registration address at the address for the rental property but he does not reside there.

According to information reported on that blog, McNaught moved from the 51st district 12 months ago and is voting from the address of a house he owns but rented out to tenants who now live in that house.

The Larimer County Assessor’s website shows 3402 Florida Ave. (McNaught’s former residence) was recorded as being sold May 11, 2009 to Troy and Laura Jarosik. Contrary to what is being reported, there is no evidence McNaught still owns that property or that the current residents are leasing.

McNaught presented a letter from the law firm Hale-Friesen written by attorney Ryan Call to both the Republican Party Chairman, Larry Carillo and the Chairman of the House District 51 Central Committee, Carl Smith.

The letter provides a qualified formal legal opinion which states in part, “…It is the opinion of the undersigned legal counsel that you are eligible to be a candidate and be selected by the vacancy committee of the 51st Republican District Central Committee.”

The attorney’s letter is addressed to a residential address in Loveland that McNaught does not own but has put under contract for a month to month tenancy. McNaught is said to now be registered to vote in Loveland at the new address but we cannot verify this independently or provide you a link because voter information on the county website is private.

Therefore, it appears the legal issue is not necessarily the bigger problem for McNaught as the county party has accepted his candidacy. The 80 members of 51st Republican House District Central Committee, however, are charged with making the appointment and will need to review the facts regarding this and any other issue that arises between now and August 13 before making their final decision.

Marostica Fails To Mend Fences – Will He Follow Arlen Specter?

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Speculation about Don Marostica changing his political affiliation from Republican to Democrat have abounded now for years. We don’t believe it is likely because Arlen Specter’s situation is very different for many reasons; not the least of which Democrats like Specter. In the case of Marostica, Democrats only like him right where he is – twisting a knife in the back of his fellow Republicans.

Solomon (a local Republican activist) emailed his many friends two weeks ago in preparation of Marostica’s fence mending meeting at Penguin’s coffee shop in Loveland. The email stated the following:

I have been in communication with Rep Don Maroctica’s office to set up a meeting. We will have a meeting with Rep. Don Marostica on the 25 of April 9:00 AM at Penguins. This will give us the opportunity to discuss with him issues that we feel are important to us. I have talked with a lot of you and you have voiced a disapproval with Rep. Don Marostica. This is your opportunity to talk with him face to face. You can email him and let him know what are some of the topics that you would like to discuss at Don@donmarostica.com.

Anyone familiar with Marostica’s city council history knows he abandoned his public service mid-term when it was no longer advantageous for his business. He has clearly given-up on his dreams to run for governor and is now trying to get the best deal he can from Governor Ritter to influence the flow of the federal stimulus dollars.

Marostica came across as a self-impressed bellicose man during Saturday’s meeting who is used to being a big fish in a small pond. His Republican colleagues in Denver are certainly difficult for him to understand. They don’t necessarily put status, power and money ahead of principle when serving in public office. Marostica will never be satisfied with his party’s leadership (from either party) as long as those individuals elevate principle over personal ambitions.

Marostica’s transparent pursuit of prestige and money combined with his lack of refinement and intellect make for an awful legislator regardless of his party affiliation. His absolute abandonment of any guiding principle or philosophy regarding government also make him dangerous to his party.

Loveland needs to expunge itself of this embarrassing episode in representative government when money alone allowed a person who didn’t know the difference between a “legislature” and a “legislator” to represent them in Denver. Marostica continues to refer to himself as a “legislature” in public meetings.

Let this be a lesson that we need better candidate forums and a more rigorous press to ferret out the opportunists from the sincere. As for Republicans, finding a qualified candidate who has more integrity than Don Marostica to serve in public office should be an easy task; nearly everyone in Loveland qualifies.

While Marostica continues to publicly tell the leadership in his party to “go jump in a lake” we are hoping he takes his own advice. If not, the Republican voters in the next primary will certainly be happy to do it for him.

Marostica tells constituents that Republicans have been lying about Arveschoug-Bird

Monday, March 16th, 2009

“Now, I know Republicans — really get nervous about that because they have been telling that lie for a long time.”

The above comment by State House Republican Don Marostica started his town hall meeting in Loveland last Saturday off on the wrong foot. Often speaking in a scolding voice, Marostica largely blamed TABOR and Colorado Republicans for the state’s current budget mess. Marostica is the lone Republican looking to remove spending limits imposed by Arveschoug-Bird.

Even fellow moderate Republican and former State Senator Steve Johnson is against Marostica’s current efforts. Johnson, now a Larimer County Commissioner, voted in favor of the CCI (lobby organization for Colorado Counties) opposing SB 228. The bill seeks to remove a 6% spending increase cap that Marostica and the Democratic leadership in the State Legislature are seeking to remove to increase state spending.

Special Report On Taxpayer Transparency Act

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Despite threats from Rep. Don Marostica to embarrass her if she does it, Rep. BJ Nikkel has introduced the Taxpayer Transparency Act (HB 09-1288)

It appears as though Marostica promised the governor to drop the bill in exchange for a promise to implement it by executive order but what else did he promise? People are wondering as Marostica appears to be the Democrat’s dancing poodle on the Joint Budget Committee. Only time may tell but there really must be more in it for Marostica.

See our special investigative report on the abandonment by Marostica on an important bill he leveraged heavily to campaign on during his recent re-election to Colorado’s legislature.

Marostica Meltdown – Brings Hundreds of People To LovelandPolitics

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Across Colorado, from newspaper stories to blogs to the floor of the Colorado State Legislature, people are talking about Don Marostica’s latest verbal attack on leaders within his own political party. In taking a contrary position Marostica described his fellow Republicans as “Has-beens” and “Losers.”

LovelandPolitics archived stories about Marostica are receiving record numbers of visits as people try and understand who is this guy who appears to be acting so erratically in recent months and ask the question, “was he ever a Republican?”

The answer is complicated. Marostica once told Democrat rival Jodi Radke that he too was a Democrat only Loveland’s high number of Republicans prevented him from running as one. On nearly every issue other than 2nd Amendment, Marostica is an antagonist to his own party. Immigration (he supported HB 1313), Tax and spend, eminent domain and now TABOR are all issues where Marostica is fighting the Republicans.

Here are links to the top 4 stories that people appear to be visiting the most;

2. Eminent Domain
3. Self-licking Ice Cream Cone

Do you have a view on the Marostica Meltdown? How about his dropping the transparency bill and later threatening a colleague who introduced the same measure?

Marostica running for governor, Brush stepping down and Washburn campaigns for County Surveyor

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

Please feel free to comment here about any of the three previous stories of Marostica running for governor, Kirk Brush stepping down and Chad Washburn campaigning to be the next county surveyor.

Do you think Marostica can be elected governor? Do you support Larry Carillo as head of Larimer County’s Republican Party and who should the Larimer County Commissioners appoint to follow Donnelly in the surveyor’s office?
